TMJ and Bruxism Treatment

Your bite is composed of your upper and lower teeth, which are supported by a system of bones, muscles, connective tissues, joints, and ligaments. Your jaw’s motion hinges on your temporomandibular joints (TMJs), also called jaw joints. When this system becomes stressed or damaged, it can greatly affect your daily comfort and your jaw’s ability to function. Fortunately, we offer preventive treatments to address oral health issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Treatments typically address the underlying cause, while resolving the associated symptoms.

About Bruxism

Bruxism is a disorder characterized by unconscious grinding and clenching of your teeth. In many cases, patients grind their teeth most often at night, though they can also grind their teeth during the day on occasion. You may remain unaware of the problem until you begin to experience common symptoms, which may include:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Worn tooth surfaces
  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Earaches
  • Facial or jaw discomfort

About TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder (TMD) occurs when your jaw joints begin functioning below healthy capacity. There is no one set underlying cause. Instead, a variety of factors that harm or place stress on your jaw joints most likely lead to this disorder. Common contributing factors include physical trauma, a tendency to clench your jaws when you are stressed, a poor bite, and bruxism. Sufferers often experience the following symptoms:

  • Your jaw clicks or pops
  • Temporary lock jaw when you open or close your mouth
  • Soreness or tenderness surrounding your jaw joints
  • Headaches, neck pain, or shoulder pain
  • Tinnitus (consistent pain and ringing in one or both ears)

Oral Appliance Therapy

We offer non-invasive oral appliance therapy as a form of TMJ treatment and bruxism treatment. You will wear a custom-fitted oral appliance similar to a mouth guard when you sleep. The device may gently realign your jaw to relieve joint tension while cushioning your bite, preventing you from clenching or grinding your teeth.
