Checkups and Cleanings

Keeping your smile safe and healthy is a dual effort; besides brushing and flossing your teeth, you also must schedule preventive dental visits, so we may thoroughly clean your teeth while taking a closer look at your oral health.

About Dental Cleanings

Why We Encourage Them

Plaque adheres to your teeth on a daily basis. This substance is filled with bacteria, which release acids that break down tooth layers and other substances that irritate your gums. Even with excellent brushing and flossing, some amount of plaque will remain in your mouth. The result may include cavity formation and/or gum disease. You may largely avoid both of these concerns with dental cleanings. Our professional techniques and instruments allow us to thoroughly remove plaque and hardened plaque, or tartar, in hard-to-reach places on your teeth and gum line, keeping your smile healthy and beautiful.

What to Expect

One of our skilled hygienists will gently yet thoroughly remove plaque and tartar from every surface of your teeth with specialized dental instruments. She will then polish your teeth to complete the procedure and give your smile a fresh, smooth, clean feeling.

Patients with Gum Disease

We may suggest a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing if you exhibit signs of gingivitis (early gum disease). This treatment addresses hardened plaque that has developed beneath your gum line, resulting in inflammation and possible infection. A deep cleaning is typically the first step in addressing gingivitis before it progresses into periodontitis (a more severe form of gum disease).

About Dental Checkups

Why We Encourage Them

Most problems that affect your oral health are preventable. By monitoring your oral health regularly, we can detect changes early rather than once an issue has progressed and damage has occurred. The sooner we catch an abnormality or disorder, the sooner we are able to address it with an appropriate course of treatment.

What to Expect

Your dental checkup will include a multi-faceted examination. First, we will provide you with a visual exam, where we will look for changes in the soft tissues of your mouth as well as signs of tooth decay and gum disease. We will then take a closer look at the internal workings of your oral cavity with the use of advanced technology, including digital X-rays, if necessary. By considering the visual information and asking you a series of questions regarding changes you have noticed or discomfort, we may offer a diagnosis and suggestions for appropriate treatment. Your checkup will also include an oral cancer screening to look for small lesions, ulcers, and other potentially-harmful irregularities. By discovering and treating oral cancer in its earliest stages, we can greatly improve the chances of successful treatment.
